We track one thing closely: what is actually happening in Cypriot and Eastern Mediterranean gas — block by block, well by well, decision by decision.

The reason to use this site rather than a press release is not that we know something nobody else does. It is that every figure here carries the source it came from, the category it was reported in, and the date it was last checked — and that one person is accountable for all of it.

Yuri built OilCyprus to close a gap he kept running into: reliable, structured data on Cyprus's offshore gas was scattered across ministry announcements, EU filings and operator releases. He compiles and verifies the block, field and licensing data against primary sources, and reviews the analysis published alongside the news.

What we keep track of

Not “comprehensive coverage of the energy sector” — this, specifically, kept current:

How a number gets onto this site

This is the part that decides whether you can quote us. There are four rules, and the fourth is the one most sites break.

1 It comes from a primary source The Ministry of Energy, the Cyprus Hydrocarbons Company, a regulatory filing or the operator's own release. Every page names which one, on the page.
2 It keeps its category A 2C contingent resource is not gas in place, and a two-field estimate is not a per-field number. We label which one you are reading and we never add them together.
3 It carries a date Entity pages show when the figure was last checked; the milestones tracker shows when the whole set was last reviewed. A number without a date is a rumour.
4 When it changes, the old one goes One figure, one place. The same fact does not get to say two different things in two corners of the site — that is the failure mode we spend most of our time hunting.

What a machine writes, and what a person writes

Some of this site is generated. Rather than bury that in a footnote, here is the exact line.

Written by a person All block, field, well and company data. The milestones tracker. The annual reviews. Every explanation of what a figure means and why it is not comparable to the one beside it.
Generated, then labelled The analysis under each news item — key facts, impact, why it matters for Cyprus — is written by a language model and marked as such where it appears. It is original analysis, not a summary of the source article.
Selected automatically News selection is a pipeline: it scores each item for relevance to Cyprus and the East Med and publishes what clears the threshold. The editor reads the feed afterwards and pulls anything that should not have run. Entity data is never published this way.

If we get something wrong

On a site of this kind the useful question is not whether there are errors, but what happens when you find one.

Tell us, with the page and the figure. We will either correct it or write back explaining why we think it stands — and if you have the primary document, that settles it faster than any argument.

A correction to entity data changes the figure and its verified date on the same day. We do not leave a superseded number sitting on a second page.

What we are not

Worth stating plainly, because all three get assumed.

Not investment advice We publish no recommendations, targets or valuations, and we have no view on what you should do with any of this.
Not the primary source We compile and frame. Where a number originates with an operator or the ministry, the page says whose it is so you can go to it directly.
Not the whole basin The Cypriot EEZ is covered exhaustively. Beyond it we cover only the fields that bear directly on Cyprus's export route — not the East Med at large.
